This album thingy is finally coming together!!!

It's been a year in the making thus far and although we still have work to do, I'm proud to say that we've got some amazing tracks to share with you. Since the fall of our home base, the late great Chung King, we've been all over the place: J-Rock, Deepwater, Big Red (my personal studio), Downtown, and lastly but definitely towards the top of the list, Avatar.

We are blessed to be able to record and mix at Avatar... truly, truly blessed. Initially we tracked in studio A, which is debatably one of the best and most historic live rooms in NY, if not the world. (Thanks Tino!!!) And now, Ari's gluing everything together by mixing on a Neve VRP 72 input console.

We've been working together on this project together for such a long time now, making every effort to obtain the HIGHEST sound quality, that being able to see this particular sonic experience to fruition from beginning to end is the serendipitous arrangement of several pieces of good fortune. (not to mention a serious amount of work...) Here's a clip of Ari mixing in the Neve board in Studio C:

I'm back in NYC, fresh off of tour and I'm feeling pretty damn good if I do say so myself : ) There's multiple things I'm working on at the same time now, one of which is a portion of my album (which seems to be gestating at the rate of an elephant). I've been working on tracks for some other artists and doing a WHOLE lotta writing these days. Luckily, I am constantly inspired by the many different and amazing people I am blessed to be aquatinted and working with. Here's a little video to keep you updated on all the going ons, improvisations and shenanigans taking place
Yes. The rumors are true – I shaved off a large portion of my hair. Life sometimes give you lemons and I hear that when lemons are thrown at you, your supposed to make lemonade (although I’ve also heard that you can squirt them in peoples eyes…). As of late, life presented me with a cliff and I don’t know about you, but it was time for me to take a leap of faith.

In order to fully embody this new form of transportation, I decided that a fresh new haircut was in order and, well… You’re just gonna have to watch the video to see how it turned out. But as with all things in life, it definitely didn’t go as expected.

Indeed. Men of the world and especially NYC, take this African proverb to heart; When a Lion Roars He Don't Catch Game. It's better to lay low and let the carrion come to you.

This is probably also true with the music industry. Right now I'm hiding in the bushes waiting for the right time to jump out in full camo with branches strategically stuck in my hair, and then comes the part where I sink my teeth in. You'll never see it coming, and in the end you'll be like, 'How did I not see that coming!?!?' Good question. For those of you who actually look at and read my blog.... shhhhhhhh. Let's just keep this between you and I ; )

Here's a new video for your viewing pleasure. These clips are from an audition we had last week for a new keyboard player. The powers that be were good to us that day, for we not only found someone to lay it down, we found 2 people...

As of one month ago I became the newest member of my band ; ) Not only am I singing my ass off, but now I'm also playin' dem keys as well - not to mention holding it down with the chit chat.

So far the experience has been extremely satisfying. I feel like I haven't really PLAYED keys since I was at Berklee so it's an amazing feeling to flex those creative muscles again. It makes me appreciate the boys in my band on another level I hadn't experienced before - They have been so supportive and helpful throughout this process and I am a lucky woman to have them in my life.

That being said, I can't stay seated for too long... Who's gonna wear the mini - dresses? We're still looking for the right person to fill in for Cian and I'm hopeful that they're on their way to me right now.

Below are some pictures from a few shows we recently had: One in Boston with good friends, The 6th Degree (that's me playing melodica with them), and also from last Friday night down in PA.

Things have been CRAZY lately. With shows in NY, Boston and Philly this month, rehearsals, sound checks, studio sessions, fittings, meetings and events - November has turned out to be insane. (But thankfully in a good way)
The only thing that seems to be missing from my life these days is sleep, but as we all know, there's no rest for the weary and New York never slumbers. I'm sure it will all catch up to me sooner than later but for now I'm enjoying the grind. If I fall off the face of the planet for a week or two, I'm probably just asleep...
Here are a few pics from recent events. Up top we have Serena Fortier and Daylon Alexander, both amazing solo artists in their own right, backing up yours truly. Below that, Marisa - who is half of the beautiful management duo GEM is entertaining the crowd as a little eye candy with talented MC Tonedeff. And at the very bottom, the other half of Gem, Sophie Goudard with longtime NY DJ and producer K Life Walks. Big ups to all my people who have been so helpful in the last few weeks, especially my band mates : )

I'm glad you decided to join us : ) We've been working extremely late and long hours trying to make this album come alive. We began back in July when we tracked basics for 2 days at Avatar studio's , after which we immediately went on tour. It was a crazy weekend to say the least... Since then, things really haven't seemed to slow down very much, which is a good thing, albeit very stressful at times.

The first track, 'Good Man' (which you can download on the home page for FREE, right now!!) turned out sooo well. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - THANK YOU to my co-producers on this track, Jamey Zebrack and Ari Raskin. This is a track a woman can STAND BEHIND and let me tell you, I have my two feet firmly planted... 'Good Man' came straight from my heart and soul, not to mention the past few years of my life.

Since then, we've been working hard on the next two tracks. I am a blessed woman to be able to make music in such amazing places with such amazing people and I'm excited to share it with you. I am OCD when it comes to cleaning and straightening up my recordings to keep them at their FRESHEST. Already, we've put in over 30 hours on each track and we're still at it. Just a few more sessions and we should have some seriously heavy recordings on our hands : ) Come join us @ Chung King studios in NYC's West Village for a sneak peak

 Hello again : )

So, NYC got DUMPED on last week. It was absolutely insane - rivaled only by the insanity I witnessed at JFK after they canceled over 500 flights of people trying to get home to their families for xmas. Wowsers!!! Lucky for me, I made it home on the wings of good timing and several random acts of kindness. I got on my flight with literally minutes to spare and a bag that weighed 49 pounds. (someone up there likes me).

Speaking of Christmas miracles, I recently lost my melodica. I thought it was a goner... but I was wrong. Oh so wrong. Apparently I had left it on the counter at the deli after a very long and late session. The amazing individual who made my PB&J that fateful day kept my little friend behind the counter until he saw Ari walking by a few days later. He actually went outside, flagged him down as he was cruising by and returned it!!! Being the highly cynical and jaded New Yorker that I have become over the years, this has re-instilled my faith in humanity. Sure, we might all be going to hell in a hand basket at some point (watch out 2012), but there IS goodness out there in the world and it makes great sandwiches.

Anyway, besides witnessing everyday miracles and blogging about them, I have been hard at work. Here's another video for your viewing pleasure : ) Enjoy

Thank you to Angie Fernandes, Andrew Yang, Danica Warren, and Jessica Yatrofsky for making everything happen.

There's supposed to be a storm tonight in Brooklyn...

They have plow and salt trucks lined up along 4th Ave, idling at attention, ready and waiting to remove and dispense. And yet... it's not snowing - at least not right now. They say you can't predict the weather? Well apparently if you're NYC you can try and be repeatedly wrong. (Good thing you already canceled school tomorrow! And flights in and out of JFK!) This is the second dump we've expected in a weeks time but it appears to be another no show, no snow storm.

Tick Tock - Tick Tock - Tick Tock

New York City isn't the only woman about to happen. A feeling of great expectation is thickening in the air: Forming outside on the streets, pilling up on the floor of my apartment, and posting up against the walls around my heart. Something worthwhile this way comes. They've always told me so. I'm expecting a great storm.

Here's a new video of Erin playing a solo performance of 'Satisfied' on a vintage Wurlitzer A200. ”We were putting together new material at a rehearsal one day and all of a sudden this song kind of came to life. I think it took about 20 minutes to write the whole thing. It all started with Steve's bassline and then everything fell into place. I've written a whole bunch of songs with a lot of different people but I hardly ever experience something so organic and easy as writing with my boys.”

I am so excited to share with you on of my favorite and most organic collaborations : )

5G is a Brooklyn based production company consisting of JJ Brown and Dan Maier. When we first met I had just finished my first album and was a New York newbie. God bless the powers that be because they brought me to 5G's front door and we've been working together ever since.

The first time JJ heard Soul Revolution he told me the song was asking for a remix and that he wanted to bless the song with one. One pro tools file and a week or so later and here we have the Soul Revolutions 5G REMIX. What's so special and unique to me about the remix is that JJ didn't just take the acappella and completely abandon my original concept - he took the parts of my version that spoke to him, added a 5G hip-hop perspective and brought the song to a place that I can truly say is SOOOO me and SOOOO 5G.

Check out the video of us playing the song live at JJ's 'Connect The Dots' record release party at SOB's in NYC. You can download the song for FREE right here at www.erinbarra.com - please share with your friends and family. Let's all have a SOUL REVOLUTION!!!
